You can go to Tanzania at any time of year. The choice of the period or season depends on your itinerary and the activities expected.

In short, there are two high seasons (from June to September and from December to January). The rest of the year is considered the low season.

Visa

You must have a tourist or business visa to enter Tanzania.

You can use online through the Tanzanian Immigration Department:

You can ask for the visa at the Tanzanian embassy near your residence.

You could also ask for the visa on your arrival at any Tanzanian international airports (Kilimanjaro airport, Julius Nyerere airport, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar airport).

The visa costs 50 USD. There are desks for foreign currency exchanges at the airports.

To enter Tanzania, your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive and at least one blank page.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

To enter Tanzania, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk.

The following vaccines are also recommended: Cholera, Hepatitis A and B, Tuberculosis, Typhoid, and Tetanus.

Malaria is endemic, but it can be avoided: use insecticides, mosquito nets, and take prophylactic antimalarial drugs as advised by your doctor.
Drink only boiled or bottled water.

  • Languages: Swahili is the national language, but English is also widely used.
  • Currencies: The national currency is TZS (Tanzanian Shilling). The banks accept foreign currencies like EUR, USD and travellers’ cheques for conversion.
  • Health: Before travel, reach out to your doctor to get advice about preventive treatment for diseases like malaria. You may also contact the nearest Tanzanian embassy to get an updated list of the mandatory vaccinations.
  • Driving: To drive in Tanzania, you need your national driving license with an international driving license issued by your national authority. People drive on the left side, like in the UK.
  • Cooking: All varieties of local and international foods are served in hotels, restaurants, lodges, and private accommodations.
  • Visa: It can be obtained easily at the Tanzanian embassy in your city or directly on arrival at the airport. Ensure you have all required documents.
  • Insurance: We strongly advise customers to take out travel insurance covering loss of luggage or valuables, individual accidents, and medical expenses.
