Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maa language spoken by the Maasai people, is a dynamic volcanic formation located within the Gregory Rift, south of Lake Natron in Tanzania’s Arusha Region.
This mountain holds great cultural significance for the Maasai, who regard it as sacred. Ol Doinyo Lengai is part of the volcanic system of the East African Rift Valley and is unique for its production of Natrocarbonatite lava. This highly fluid lava is less viscous than other types of lava and contains virtually no silicon.
Reaching the summit of Ol Doinyo Lengai rewards you with breathtaking views. To the north, the vast salt flats of Lake Natron stretch into the distance, adorned with a multitude of pink-hued flamingos along its shores. Beyond that, the border with Kenya comes into view.
To the east, the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro stands tall, while to the west, the lush wooded escarpments and the multitude of hills along the western flanks of the Great African Rift Valley capture your attention.
