The journey begins in the lush rainforest and follows a path that reveals stunning views of Mount Meru, the Shira Plateau, and the majestic summit of Kilimanjaro – Kibo Peak. Compared to the Marangu and Rongai routes, Machame features steeper sections and higher altitudes, making it more physically demanding and ideal for adventurous trekkers.

Trekkers pass through diverse ecological zones, including dense rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and ultimately the arctic summit zone. This itinerary is designed specifically for those taking on the Machame Route to conquer Africa’s highest peak – Mount Kilimanjaro.
Pick up at the hotel after breakfast with your lunch boxes and have a 30 -40 minute drive to Machame gate. At about 1800m above sea level, we will be at the gate until we complete the registration. Start the hike through the rain forest for about 5-6 hours to reach Machame camp, which is about 3000m above sea level. For dinner and overnight.
Pick up after breakfast and start the hike towards Shira camp, which will take 3-4 hours. In this walk, we will pass into the moorland after leaving Machame camp. If the sky is clear, you will have a good view of Mount Meru, Kibo peak, and the village down the mountain. It is about 3840m above sea level. We stay in the Shira camp for dinner and overnight.
Pick up after breakfast with your lunch boxes. Start ascending toward Baranco Camp, which is about 3940m above sea level. It’s going to take 5-6 hours. Today, it’s important to have an acclimatization walk. Then, you have to climb the Lava Tower, which is about 4600m above sea level. Then you have to hike down to Baranco camp for Dinner and Overnight.
Pick up at the camp after breakfast and start ascending to Karanga Valley camp. Today is going to be a short hike day. You will hike for around 3-4 hours, and it’s about 4100m above sea level. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Valley camp
After breakfast, start a hike through the Alpine desert to Barafu camp. It’s around 4600m above sea level—dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp.
After some snacks and a cup of coffee or tea, around midnight, take a hike to the summit, which takes 5-6 hours. At the time around sunrise, you will be at the summit of Uhuru Peak, which is about 5895m above sea level. After all the celebration at the Uhuru peak. We descend back to Barafu camp for lunch and proceed to Mweka camp (3000m above sea level) for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, the descent through the rain forest to Mweka gate takes 2-3 hours. There you will catch a car which will take you to Moshi town.
