Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcanic mountain in the Gregory Rift, south of Lake Natron, in Tanzania’s Arusha Region. In the Maa language, which the Maasai people speak, it is regarded as the “Mountain of God.”
This volcano is part of the East African Rift Valley’s volcanic system and is notable for its production of Natrocarbonatite lava. This unique lava is highly fluid and contains minimal silicon, distinguishing it from other types of lava.
When visitors reach the summit crater, they are rewarded with breathtaking views. To the north, the salt flats of Lake Natron stretch out, dotted with the vibrant pink flamingos that inhabit the area. In the distance, the border of Kenya can be seen. To the east, the impressive Mount Kilimanjaro captures attention.
The western landscape is characterized by lush, forested hills and steep escarpments, which are part of the western slopes of the Great African Rift Valley. To the south, the stunning Crater Highlands of Ngorongoro is known for being one of Africa’s premier wildlife conservation areas.
After breakfast, depart from Moshi or Arusha city and transfer to the Lake Natron campsite; the journey takes approximately seven hours. Once you arrive, you can freshen up at the camp before visiting Ngare Sero’s stunning waterfalls, which flow downhill to the west of the Lake Natron Nguruman Escarpment. After the visit, we will return to the campsite for dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, you will leave the camp and head to Lake Natron, an alkaline lake that serves as the main breeding ground for Lesser Flamingoes. Approximately three-quarters of the world’s flamingo population makes its home here. After enjoying the tour of Lake Natron, you will return to the camp to rest before trekking up the mountain around midnight.
Climbing Mount Ol Doinyo will begin at midnight and take approximately six hours to reach the peak, allowing you to witness the breathtaking sunrise as its rays illuminate the Great Rift Valley.
During your trek up Ol Doinyo, you will be accompanied by an experienced native Maasai guide. After enjoying the stunning views from the summit, you will descend the mountain, where you’ll meet your driver for a transfer back to the camp to freshen up and get some well-deserved rest.
Afterwards, we will drive back to Arusha or Moshi City, passing through the Ngare Sero Maasai village. Here, you can visit the Maasai bomas and experience their way of life.
