about Tanzania Mountain Climbing

The most famous is Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Others include Mount Meru (the second-highest in Tanzania) and the Usambara Mountains for scenic trekking.

No technical climbing experience is required. However, a good level of physical fitness, mental preparation, and proper acclimatization are essential for a successful summit.

The best months are during the dry seasons:

  • January to early March (warmer with occasional snow)
  • June to October (cooler and clearer skies)
  • Lemosho Route (8 days) – Scenic, high success rate
  • Machame Route (7 days) – Popular, challenging
  • Rongai Route (7 days) – Quieter, drier, gradual ascent
  • Marangu Route (5–6 days) – Easiest but lower success rate, hut accommodations

Essential items include:

  • Thermal layers and waterproof gear
  • Hiking boots, gloves, and a headlamp
  • Sleeping bag (for high altitudes)
  • Daypack, trekking poles, and refillable water bottles
